Understory: An Anthology from the American South, Volume II is the second installment in the press's ongoing Understory anthology series — a gathering of Southern writers, chosen through an open submission period, brought together in one collection. The first volume answered a specific moment: work made in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This volume widens the call, gathering poetry and prose from writers across the American South, inviting work that finds what usually goes unseen — writing as bioluminescent as a blue ghost firefly or a patch of goblin's gold moss, as rooted and vibrant as a cliffside of fiddlehead ferns. The call asks for stories resilient and surprising enough to change how the South gets seen: work that names its coordinates, unafraid of the grit and honest truth of the place we live.
